Uppsala City Garden (Stadsträdgården)

Uppsala, Sweden

View on map

Uppsala’s central city park grew from a nineteenth-century riverside promenade and garden plots on former crown land. Today its flower beds, old river walk, public art, dance pavilion and open-air stage make Stadsträdgården a place for both quiet visits and city-wide gatherings.

Quick facts

  • The river promenade between Islandsfallet and Kap was laid out in 1842 with three rows of maples and elms, before the wider city garden was established.

  • Stadsträdgården was comprehensively redesigned in 1909; municipal cultivation plots in its southern part continued until 1971.

  • Parksnäckan, the park’s open-air stage, was built in 1982, and Uppsala Municipality says the summer stage has hosted concerts and events for more than 50 years.

Guide

At Stadsträdgården, Uppsala’s city park, a flower garden shares space with traces of a working landscape and a long tradition of public gathering. The park lies beside the Fyris River, south of Svandammen, with the old riverside promenade leading toward Studenternas. Its name means “city garden,” and that is apt: this green space was shaped as much by municipal horticulture as by leisure.
