Old St. Gertrude Church in Riga

Old St. Gertrude’s Church is a red-brick Lutheran landmark in central Riga. Consecrated in 1869, it continues the history of a congregation whose earlier churches stood outside the city’s fortifications.

Old St. Gertrude’s Church rises in red brick where Riga’s Ģertrūdes and Baznīcas streets meet. Its nineteenth-century tower belongs to a much older story: successive churches dedicated to St. Gertrude served communities outside the old fortifications, where war and the city’s expansion repeatedly changed the landscape.
