A railway-side memorial in Riga recalls people deported from Latvia under Soviet rule. Its freight wagon, stone and figures evoke the journeys and the separation of families.
Guide preview
A freight wagon stands beside the railway at Torņakalns, near a stone and a group of figures. Together they recall people deported from Latvia under Soviet rule. Railway stations were places where families were assembled and put onto trains for a journey whose destination many did not know. This is a memorial space beside a working transport corridor: pause for the people it remembers and respect those visiting to mourn.
